Nyx

Candle wax dripped down the cavernous walls, trickling like dozens of tiny tree roots branching off in every direction. Nyx watched the dancing flames with rapt attention, head resting on the pillows beside Niko’s shoulder whilst his nimble fingers plucked at the strings of his electric guitar.

Lavish bed sheets brushed against Nyx’s legs as she nestled herself deeper into the cluster of pillows, simultaneously prompting Kade to readjust his hold on her before she resettled and peered down at the sleeping Malamute at the end of the bed. Kade nestled his head in the crook of her neck, chin resting atop her shoulder whilst her fingers toyed with his bracelets. The slow tune of the guitar chords registered in her mind, ghosting across the cave like lovers danced in the summer rain. “Are you playing what I think you’re playing?”

Niko grinned, peering down at her, “What do you think I’m playing?”

“Not, I think,” Nyx corrected. “I know what you’re playing.”

“Don’t be shy,” he said as his skilled fingers danced over the neck of the guitar.

“With Or Without You. U2,” Nyx shook her head with amusement, forcing herself not to smile as his eyes lit up at her words. “You know?”

“Know what?”

She narrowed her eyes, “Don’t play—”

“It’s the perfect song for a first kiss … or second,” his grin seemed to grow, “Kadey’s a good kisser, isn’t he?”

She blinked once, pondering the idea of the easy, almost teasing confession he’d made—turning it over in her mind whilst reminding herself that he was immortal and was bound to have tried everything the world had to offer—she wondered what Niko had seen, what he’d experienced in his decade shy of a century existence.

“Chica?” he prompted, a devious smirk playing at the edges of his lips in a way that revealed his teeth.

Nyx refocused. His scent of sea salt, weed and copper washing over her like the swell of high tide. “What’s it like?” she asked.

Kade lifted his head from the assorted pillows, leaning forward, “What’s it like?” He studied her face carefully, “Being immortal, you mean?”

She nodded, wonder clouding her thoughts. “I can’t begin to imagine what you’ve seen. What you’ve done in the span of one of my lifespans.”

Kade turned to Niko, “Why don’t you tell her, Nik,” he drawled, patting Niko’s thigh with his lips curled into a teasing smile. “You’re the old man here.”

“Old man?” Niko spluttered indignantly, gesturing to the lithe definition of his body, honed from years of predatory finesse. “You’re ninety-seven years younger than me and neither of us looks a day over twenty.”

Kade chuckled, “Anyway, Niko’s old enough to have seen the biggest bands in the eighties when they were just starting their musical careers.”

“He means the start, chica, like when they used to play at bars and small venues.” Niko stopped playing, “And now … they sell out entire stadiums.”

Nyx listened, enthralled, hanging onto each of his words like they were the holy grail. Her mind reeled just thinking about it, so much time, so much information.
